Instagram comment-to-DM sends a chosen private message when a new original comment matches your enabled keyword rule. Set it up in a connected account’s Inbox, choose a post or account-wide scope, add exceptions, and review the job history. A private reply does not permit follow-up DMs until the person responds.
A viewer asks for the guide in your Instagram comments. You want to send the right link and keep the conversation close to the post that started it. TokPortal connects that moment to a private reply, then brings the conversation into the account’s Direct messages Inbox.
This guide covers eligible Instagram accounts managed through TokPortal. It does not promise unrestricted cold messaging, TikTok DMs or access to an arbitrary account just by entering its handle. The rule is a message you write, triggered by the terms you select.

What happens from comment to conversation?
The flow has three parts: a new original comment arrives, its text matches your enabled keyword rule, and TokPortal sends your configured private reply after checking the account and comment. If the person responds, you can continue from Direct messages within the available messaging window.
For example, a post offers a launch checklist and asks interested readers to comment GUIDE. Your message could say: “Here is the launch checklist you asked for: https://example.com/checklist”. That address is an example; replace it with your real, relevant destination. Explain what people will receive before asking them to comment.
Set up one focused Instagram rule
- Open the managed account and select Inbox → Comments.
- Open the comment-to-DM settings and choose the supported post scope: one post or new comments across the account.
- Add the keyword or phrase. Choose whole-word or contains matching, and add exceptions for comments that should not trigger.
- Write a useful private message and check the destination on a phone.
- Enable the rule, then review its history as real new comments arrive.
Start with one offer and a short, distinct keyword. A very broad trigger can match conversations you did not intend. Exceptions help avoid ambiguous matches, and the pause control lets you stop the rule without editing your publishing schedule.
New comments, not a historical blast
Newly enabled or edited rules apply to original comments created after activation. They do not scan a post’s entire comment history or repeatedly message the same commenter for the same event. Own-account comments and replies are excluded from the trigger flow to prevent feedback loops.
Editing a rule also changes which queued work remains eligible. Review the stored settings and history after changing keywords, scope or message content. An empty history can simply mean that no eligible new comment matched; it is not a reason to send a batch manually.
Private reply and follow-up messages are different
The first private reply is tied to a real comment. It is not permission to keep sending promotional DMs. Wait for the person to respond, then use the Inbox to continue while the platform allows it. Message availability and errors should remain visible rather than being treated as permission to retry indefinitely.
A job waiting on a provider cooldown can take longer. A confirmed provider acceptance is distinct from a person reading the message. If the result is uncertain, inspect the original operation; creating a fresh request can produce a duplicate. Do not advertise guaranteed delivery or response times.
Connection, Coverage and automation access
The account needs an active verified connection and the required permissions. Its TokPortal Coverage must permit use. A disconnected account or Instagram security checkpoint needs recovery through the normal account workflow before messaging can resume. Reconnecting the AI assistant alone does not repair a social-account token.
TokPortal currently does not debit credits for API private replies and DM actions. This does not make provider usage unlimited. Paid human Seeding remains a separate service with a price shown before ordering.
Build the same workflow with API or MCP
Developers can read settings and history, configure the supported rule, and subscribe to automation-result events. Start with the Inbox API documentation and current OpenAPI schema. Rules are disabled until explicitly enabled; use the returned version when saving an update so one operator cannot silently overwrite another.
For an AI assistant, add the custom TokPortal MCP server and verify a read-only request first. Give the assistant the account, intended trigger, approved message and scope. Ask it to show the proposed rule before enabling anything. Keep account IDs and operation IDs in your own integration records.
